Finning Power Rental launches first battery system in major fleet upgrade

Finning Power Rental (FPR) has introduced the first Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to its fleet, alongside a comprehensive upgrade to new Cat® EU Stage V diesel generator sets.

The expansion allows Finning Power Rental to deliver cleaner, quieter and more efficient energy solutions across the construction, infrastructure and healthcare sectors.

The upgrades will help customers meet increasingly stringent environmental and compliance targets while reducing operating costs and support a wide range of rental applications, from prime and standby power to emergency backup.

At the centre of the new investment is the Cat XES120 Battery Energy Storage System, the first BESS offering from FPR for the rental market. With a 72 kW output and 127.9 kWh of stored energy, it can be deployed as a stand-alone power source or paired with a diesel generator to create a hybrid solution that reduces fuel consumption, noise and maintenance needs.

The system is also equipped with remote monitoring and control, allowing FPR engineers to adjust runtime schedules, voltage parameters and manage alarms remotely.

Cheryl Griffith, Technical Operations Manager at Finning Power Rental, said: “We’re excited to introduce battery energy storage systems to the Finning Power Rental fleet, as well as Cat EU Stage V diesel generators. It expands our capability to deliver hybrid power solutions that help our customers reduce emissions and fuel costs.”

The company has also added four new Cat EU Stage V diesel generator sets to the fleet, with capacities ranging from 20 kVA to 550 kVA. This includes the XQP20, XQP200, XQP310 and XQP550, powered by Cat engines including the C2.2, C7.1, C9.3 and C18.

The range is compatible with HVO fuel, a lower-emission alternative to conventional diesel, which, according to UK Government data, can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to around 90 percent. The Stage V sets are also quieter and have long oil-change intervals.

Cheryl added: “This investment gives our customers access to the very latest low-emission technology, helping them meet sustainability and regulatory requirements in low-emission zones such as London, Glasgow and Birmingham, without compromising reliability or performance.”

Alongside the equipment investment, FPR is also expanding its technical capability to support the next generation of power solutions. Apprentices and engineers across the business are undergoing specialist training in battery system safety and hybrid power operation, supported by new tooling and certification requirements.

Cheryl added: “We’re not just investing in new equipment, we’re investing in our people. These technologies require new skills, and we’re making sure our teams are ready to support customers now and for years to come.”

The fleet investment also coincides with the recent appointment of Mark Albiston as Director of Electric Power and Engineering, with responsibility for Finning Power Rental. Mark brings extensive leadership experience across manufacturing, logistics and plant hire, with a strong track record in business transformation, operational excellence and sustainable growth.

His appointment strengthens Finning’s focus on developing its rental power capabilities and supporting customers through the transition to lower-emission and hybrid energy solutions.
