It’s strange to think that this time last year we were attending our last in person machinery show of 2020! In just a few weeks, we will have passed the first year anniversary of the first UK Covid-19 Lockdown. This week, Plant Planet are taking a look back at the Executive Hire Show 2020:
The Executive Hire Show 2020: Business Booming at the Biggest Hire Industry Event of the Year
Known to many as one of the most important events in the tool and plant-hire calendar, the Executive Hire Show returned to the Ricoh Arena, Coventry, in February. The show, which took place over the 5th and 6th February, highlighted some of the key themes in the plant-hire sector. From efficiency to eco-friendly kit, here’s what the show had to offer in 2020.
The Executive Hire Show brings hirers and suppliers together under one roof in a two day trade only event. Originally open to hire executives throughout the UK and Ireland, the show has gained attention from many companies based in Europe and further overseas. This makes for a diverse range of equipment on show.
The key themes of this years show seemed to be efficiency and eco-friendly equipment. Industry heavy weights JCB exhibited their growing range of fully electric machinery, offering zero-emissions electrical back-up to construction projects. Following a fantastic year at the show in 2019, in which they launched the JCB 19C-1E electric excavator, JCB returned with the fast charge version of the machine. The fully electric 1.9 tonne digger, is equipped with a load-sensing hydraulic system and sophisticated battery management system ensuring full-shift availability. The fast charge option cuts the charge time from 8-12 hour charging to under two hours for a full charge.

The Executive Hire Show 2020 featured, once again, the Innovation Trail. The trail consisted of 16 innovative products nominated by exhibitors for inclusion. Featured on the Innovation Trail was MHM Plant’s MG 6000SY Eco Generator. The 6kVA diesel generator was nominated, in part, thanks to the innovative Eco Stop/Start mode, which allows the generator to automatically stop and start according to power demand. This stop/ start technology is similar to that used in cars to avoid idling to reduce emissions and increase fuel efficiency. Presenting the product in the 10 minute Innovation Trail – Live presentation, Matt Llewellyn said: “The idea came from discussions with customers about how to make our products more eco conscious.” This comment reflects the current feeling of the equipment and plant hire sectors: that cutting emissions and promoting eco-conscious machinery should be at the forefront of the industry’s priorities.
Besides environmentally friendly and efficient machinery, emphasis was placed by some exhibitors on machine safety. This is a subject that has been at the forefront of the industry development for many years. Mecalac’s 6 MDX site dumper with canopy “aims to bridge the gap between ROPS and cabbed models”. The machine, based on the MDX cabbed dumper, offers the highest levels of protection in the case of a rollover. The dumper is available in a six tonne or nine tonne model. Both models offer a 3.4L, 55kw Perkins 854 IIIB-compliant engine. Operator safety is ensured with highvisibility access steps for safe entry and exit of the vehicle. Flashing green seatbelt icons, LED work lights and protected tail lights further ensure safety by improving site visibility in both day and night works. Further, Mecalac’s Hazard Detection and Capture Telematics can also be specified for both models.
2020 saw one of the most successful shows in the Executive Hire Show’s 13 year history. With new equipment launched and celebration of the sector’s ongoing efforts to innovate, it’s no wonder that this event remains a must-go for many companies in the equipment and plant hire industries.
With the organisers of the event making the difficult decision to postpone the 2021 show, the Executive Hire Show will return in 2022.
Chris Moore, Executive Hire Show, publishing and events director, explained the decision:
“It is with heavy hearts that we decided to move the event to 2022. Having surveyed our loyal exhibitors, this decision received the majority vote. We investigated all possibilities to stage the Show in 2021, but the unpredictable nature of COVID-19 and ongoing uncertainties have made our decision unavoidable. We are 100% committed to supporting our exhibitors, visitors, and other personnel associated with hosting the event – their health, safety, and wellbeing must be our number one priority.”
Save the date in your diaries – the Executive Hire Show will take place from 9-10th February 2022 for their biggest show yet!
