This month we would have been visiting LAMMA, the UK’s largest indoor agricultural machinery event. With the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic still causing havoc when it comes to industry events, this week we’re taking a look back at the 2020 event and all it had in store.
2019 proved to be a tumultuous year for the UK agricultural industry. Besides ongoing uncertainty surrounding Brexit and the stability of the UK Government, autumn saw widespread flooding that devastated multiple farming communities across the UK. Despite – or perhaps because of – this, exhibitors at LAMMA 2020 were keen to put forward the machinery to symbolise the bright future of farming.
LAMMA, the UK’s largest agricultural event, took place from 7th – 8th January. This was the show’s second year at its new permanent home, the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham. Over 550 new and existing exhibitors brought machinery and technology to the show, including companies such as JCB, McCormick, Farmtrac, Continental Tyres, and Landini. The event also introduced Farming 4.0, an area in which new technology was showcased and speakers enlightened visitors on the newest developments in farming tech.

The show hosted a range of exhibitors showing the latest agricultural plant machinery. Perhaps the most high profile tractor on display was the JCB Fastrac 2, the world’s fastest tractor. Visitors swarmed to take a look at the machine on the JCB stand. The Fastrac 2 was developed as JCB embarked on an ambitious plan to break their own world record for ‘fastest tractor in the world’ set in June 2019. The October 2019 record saw the Fastrac 2 hit a peak speed if 153.771mph and record an average speed of 135.191mph. This peak speed exceeded the June record by over 30mph.
It wasn’t only JCB’s stand that visitors flocked to. A multi-chrome custom wrapped tractor drew significant attention to Valtra’s stand. The tractor displayed the abilities of Valtra’s unlimited studio, in which machinery can be fitted with accessories and equipment not directly available from the production line during the normal manufacturing process. Valtra’s multi-chrome machine represents one in five Valtra orders that go through the unlimited studio.
Valtra also exhibited the new design for Valtra’s heads up display (HUD) SmartGlass. Positioned in the centre of the tractor’s front windscreen, Valtra SmartGlass is based on transparent display technology, laminated between two glass surfaces. This makes the solution very robust and suitable for the demanding operating conditions of agricultural machinery.
SmartGlass allows the operator to see vital information about the tractor without needing to look away from the work at hand. With a strong focus on front loader work, SmartGlass can display various information from the machine, such as tipping angle or load weight; or basic tractor information such as gear, engine RPM or driving speed. The operator is able to choose what is visible on the heads up display via the SmartTouch 9” touchscreen terminal. Valtra SmartGlass shows the company’s move through precision farming to smart farming.
