LEADING independent fuel distributor in the UK, Certas Energy, has launched a new fuel tank hiring initiative for its Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) product this month.
The national campaign aims to support customers for whom cost is a barrier to transitioning to low carbon fuel, while also strengthening their fuel security and offering more buying options for their specific needs.
According to a recent customer survey conducted by Certas Energy[1], four in ten businesses state that sustainability is ‘less important than keeping costs down’.
Certas Energy aims to ease the transition to renewable fuel HVO, by offering a complete tank leasing solution, eliminating the need for upfront purchase.

Every steel tank comes as standard with FuelWise Telemetry, servicing, and enhanced security features. Real-time reporting, robust design, fuel alerts, and restricted access minimize theft, making this one of the most comprehensive HVO storage leasing solutions available today.
Opting to hire an HVO tank, rather than purchasing one outright, can reduce year one costs by almost 90 per cent[2], which can free up capital for other site improvements and investments.
HVO is a drop-in solution to diesel-powered machinery and vehicles that can immediately reduce carbon emissions by up to 90 per cent[3].
Consumption of HVO in the UK almost reached 700 million litres in 2024, and Certas Energy expects the growth in demand to continue rising for the rest of this decade.
As a drop-in fuel, HVO fuel can simply be dropped and stored in existing tanks, however many businesses opt for separate tanks for their renewable and standard diesel, depending on their individual needs.
Darren Holloway, Commercial Director for Energy Solutions at Certas Energy, said: “Our ‘Tanks for Hire’ offering is all about putting our customers in control of their fuel management, addressing the high upfront costs associated with buying a tank while making the whole process more convenient. Businesses have told us what they’re looking for and we’ve developed precisely that – this is fuel management on customer terms.
“This is a great option for the growing number of companies, particularly in haulage, logistics and construction sectors across the UK, that are looking to commit to a wider scale trial or roll-out of HVO. Being able to hire our tanks has made the switch to renewable HVO more attainable and simpler than ever before.”
While leasing a tank may be preferable for some businesses, purchasing outright continues to be a valid option for firms making long-term decisions on their use of HVO, and this option is also available through Certas Energy[4].
All HVO tanks are OFTEC-registered, fully installed, and available for hire immediately and nationwide.
