A Memorandum of Understanding for the development of biomethane in the transport sector in Italy was signed 18th April in Rome, by Confagricoltura (General Confederation of Italian Agriculture), CIB (Italian Biogas Consortium), ENI, Snam and the three brands of CNH Industrial (NYSE: CNHI / MI: CNHI) that are most active in this area: FPT Industrial, New Holland Agriculture and IVECO. Present at the signing were Luciano Nieto, Chief of the Technical Secretariat of the Ministry of Agricultural, Food, Forestry and Tourism Policies, Davide Crippa, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economic Development, and Vannia Gava, Undersecretary of the Ministry of the Environment and Protection of Land and Sea, and representatives from other institutions.
FPT Industrial is today the leading European manufacturer of natural gas engines for industrial vehicles and applications. There are over 45,000 methane or biomethane engines in circulation in Europe, and the most powerful 100% natural gas engine available for industrial vehicles is branded FPT Industrial, the 460 HP Cursor 13 Natural Gas. This engine can reduce particulate emissions by 99%, and nearly eliminate CO2 emissions if fueled by biomethane.
New Holland Agriculture, for its part, has recently presented a natural gas-fueled concept tractor, and previous methane prototypes have been tested at various farms so that this solution can be industrialized in the shortest possible time. A farmer who produces biomethane from waste biomass would make their farm energy-independent, and contribute to drastically reducing the total CO2 emissions of their vehicles.
IVECO and IVECO BUS are running on European roads today with nearly 30,000 commercial vehicles and buses fueled by methane, both compressed and liquefied. A 460 HP IVECO Stralis Natural Power achieved the record for driving the longest distance on natural gas: 1,728 kilometers on a single fill, the distance between London and Madrid. Compared with an equivalent Euro VI diesel, a Stralis NP running on liquefied natural gas (LNG) emits around 90% less NO2 emissions, 99% less particulate matter, and up to 95% less CO2 when using biomethane.

A future that is closer than we think”.
Carlo Lambro, Brand President of New Holland Agriculture and CEO of CNH Industrial Italia, stated: “The agreement signed today has a special meaning for us. It will enable us to continue on a national scale what we have already envisaged and implemented, starting in 2006, with the “Energy Independent Farm” project, that is, a farm that can produce all the energy it needs, turning general waste, together with agricultural waste into biomethane. Biomethane enables a tractor, in real field conditions, to achieve zero CO2 emissions”.
Michele Ziosi, Head of Institutional Relations for CNH Industrial, who signed the agreement on behalf of IVECO, stated: “For over twenty years IVECO has been investing to offer the market a complete range of models fueled by biomethane, both in compressed and liquefied form. Biomethane enables international logistics, as well as waste collection and local public transportation to significantly reduce emissions. It is a sustainable and tangible response at environmental and even economic levels, to meet the stringent EU emissions limits for 2025 and 2030. IVECO was the first commercial vehicle manufacturer to believe in natural gas technology, and today we are undisputed leaders in the field, with nearly 30,000 methane-fueled vehicles circulating in Europe, of which about 10,000 are in Italy”.
